Jon Balke is one of Norway’s most well-known jazz musicians and composers. He has always experimented with various musical genres and has found inspiration in music from all over the world. As a result, he was asked in 2007 to create a special project, Siwan, in conjunction with Cosmopolite Scene’s 15th anniversary. Siwan was a great success. The project received international acclaim, and the album “Siwan” won the German Critics’ Prize as album of the year in 2009.
The project has now been further developed under the title “Siwan Jadid”, which includes new music and new poetry performed by a cluster of fabulous soloists and ensemble musicians from various musical traditions. Siwan Jadid is fronted by singer Kamilya Jubran, a strong, original voice from Palestine.
Both Siwan projects build upon early European music and poetry from the 700-year-long Al-Andalus epoch. The work combines Baroque music, classical Arabic music and other musical traditions from the Mediterranean region during the same era.
Siwan Jadid, with 16 musicians on stage, will premiere during this year’s Molde Jazz Festival on 16 July.
We feel fortunate that we are able to present this project in Oslo, in the evocative atmosphere of Kulturkirken Jakob.
