Ever since Taraf de Haïdouks first visited Western Europe in 1991, they have been considered a reference point for the fabulous groove, swing and vitality of Gypsy music. They have toured the world continuously, issued critically acclaimed albums and a DVD, and they can cite Johnny Depp as their number-one fan. In spite of all this they have stayed grounded, and their sense of humour, love of playing and lifestyle remain unaltered. They hail from Clejani, a small village in Romania, and are a group of “Gypsy Lautari”, traditional musicians. Their ages range from 20 to 80, and the third generation of musicians has now been added. Their repertoire includes Medieval ballads, Turkish-inspired dance tunes from the Balkans and a vocal tradition with its origins in the ancient homeland of the Gypsies, in Rajahstan.
