Could it get any better than this? When it comes to tango, it could at least be said that Plaza Francia is a combination of the best from all worlds, a collaborative effort by three outstanding musicians with a common passion for tango.
Two of these musicians, Christoph Müller and Eduardo Makaroff, usually make out two thirds of Gotan Project, a band that won great acclaim in the early 2000s for their blend of tango, electronic beats and samples. The third and perhaps most surprising musician is Catherine Ringer, former vocalist of the cult bands by the name of Les Rita Mitsouko. Their single Marcia Baïla was a great hit when it came out in 1984 and became subject to covers by both Nouvelle Vague and Ricky Martin. Even if Ringer has openly admired Latin American music, is this project her first real possibility to show her potential as a tango vocalist.
Plaza Francia’s convincing debut album, A New Tango Songbook, was released last year. Their subsequent concerts have received great reviews – UK’s The Guardian noted that Ringer “has a natural talent for the emotion and theatricality of tango, and a vocal style that can switch from breathy balladry to feisty anthems.”
Their concert at Oslo World will undoubtedly be a tour de force showing some of the best tango available in 2015!
