From Picasso to Punk and from Duchamp to Hip-Hop – there are several examples of avant-garde art or artists that have become canonized. Icons, artwork or music genres that were born in opposition to the dominant aesthetic and cultural values of their time have become part of the establishment of our time. In doing so the mainstream is re-defined. This process is not automatic: cultural institutions play a fundamental role in expanding the mainstream.This seminar explores the challenges that institutions could face and their ethical responsibility in questioning and shifting the status quo.
