Andreas Røysum Ensemble is a fascinating cross-section of the Norwegian improv scene. We meet musicians who are used to total musical freedom, in a context where they take part in the rich heritage of spiritual jazz. The music also draws on different parts of the world's musical heritage, and several key members come from different distinct music traditions, whether it be Indian classical music or traditional Norwegian folk music. But it is still coherent, and even uncomplicated music. The band's leader, clarinet player Andreas Hoem Røysum, is an uncompromising improviser and arranger, but on their debut album, he has written material with a concise, sometimes almost psychedelic pop-like sensibility. A diverse listening experience, offering plenty of beautiful melodies and musical climaxes.
