Gaye Su Akyol, Os Mutantes and ONIPA to Oslo World 2023!
A bright star of the alternative Turkish music scene, bona fide Brazilian psych legends and Afro-futurist breakout stars from the UK.
Gaye Su Akyol
The last decade, Gaye Su Akyol has been one of the brightest stars of the alternative Turkish music scene. Her albums have shown an artist willing and able to search for new ways of expanding the anatolian psych rock tradition. On stage, she is one of the most charismatic front figures on the current rock scene. Her smoky voice and atmospheric, almost occult stagecraft can make her feel like a singer from another time. But the immediacy of her lyrics and the postmodern playfulness of her band makes Gaye Su Akyol an artist speaking to the present moment.
Os Mutantes
Os Mutantes are one of the most groundbreaking bands of the psychedelic era of the late sixties, with an influence still heard in contemporary experimental pop and rock. The band started as a collaboration between the brothers Sérgio and Arnaldo Baptista, and got their sci fi-inspired name Os Mutantes (“The Mutants”) in 1966. They became quickly involved with the Tropicália movement, combining influences from The Beatles, Hendrix and Sly & the Family Stone with Brazilian music and the avant garde. Their self titled debut album is an enduring classic, they participated on the Tropicália sampler Ou Panis et Circenses, worked as the backing band for Caetano Veloso and experimented with hard rock, prog music and beyond.
ONIPA
Onipa is the fiery collaboration between some of the heaviest players on the vibrant, genre crossing UK scene at the moment. It was born out of collaboration between two long-time friends: The rapper K.O.G. (Kweku Sackey) from Ghana and the eclectic producer Tom Excell (musical director of Nubiyan Twist). When they join forces, sounds from Ghana, London and beyond meet. This year, their third album Off the Grid dropped - a journey that combines dance rhythms from Africa to electronic dance music of today's clubs and festivals, connecting African folklore and storytelling to rap, jazz and hip hop. It was released on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records, and features collaborators such as Moonchild Sanelly, David Walters, Dele Sosimi and Theon Cross.
